Poster Contest Winners Announced -HATTIESBURG, MISS.,

of the Pine Belt - SUMRALL, MS (WDAM) - Sumrall High

County Schools named as ‘Value Added Schools’ in Mississippi -
Four Lamar County Schools have been recognized at the
recent statewide conference of the Program of Research and
Evaluation of Public Schools (PREPS) with the prestigious “Value
Added Schools” designation .......

students to participate in National HOSA Conference -
Lamar Technical Center sponsors the HOSA chapter for Lamar County
School District. Club organizers are Laura Fails and Mary Taylor,

Middle School students enjoy trip to Washington, D.C. As
Spring Break welcomed time off from school and relaxation for most
students, three Purvis Middle School students went on a much
different type of vacation.......

Johnson named Assistant Principal of the Year - Ms. Stacy
Johnson, Assistant Principal at Purvis High School, has been awarded
the 2011 VIRCO Assistant Principal of the Year award for the State

Apache Team wins state honor - Oak Grove Middle School’s
Apache Team of teachers won the “Teams That Make a Difference Award”
from the Mississippi Association for Middle Level Education. This
award is presented annually at the MAMLE conference.......

OGHS
students earn top honors at science fair - Oak Grove High
School excelled at the 2011 Regional and State Science and
Engineering Fair. Melinda Solomon won Best of Fair and an
opportunity to present her project titled “Testing the Toxicity of
AH3 [Vo (sal-L-tryp) (W-Ethymethnon cartrio)] on Drosophila
Melanogaster” at the International Science and Engineering Fair
(ISEF) in Los Angeles, California, in May.
"Native
trees" have advantages for homeowners and schools in Lamar County,
MS - Mississippi’s Arbor Day happens each year on the
second Friday in February. Many soil and water conservation
districts in Mississippi are conducting programs to encourage
homeowners to plant “native trees,” trees indigenous to the state.
In Lamar County, the virtues of native trees are even being learned
by the young .......

- I was privileged to go to the State of Mississippi on Dec. 9, for
a HealthierUS School Challenge event. Actually, I was there for
three events and 11 schools received either USDA’s Gold of
Distinction Awards or Gold Awards.......

County School District Eighth Grader Receives National Honor -
According to Lamar County School District (LCSD) leaders,
an eighth grade Oak Grove student has been selected as the recipient
of the prestigious John W. Harris Leadership Award by the National
Beta Club, the nation’s largest independent, non-profit, educational
